Düden Waterfall guide EN

Going with children

Two waterfalls with opposite problems. One is flat with a cliff, the other is a climb with a cave.

Lower with toddlers, upper from school age.

The lower falls are a level clifftop park, so the walking is nothing, but you are at the edge of a cliff. The upper falls need steps and wet rock, and pay you back with the cave behind the water.

The two, side by side

SiteWhat worksWhat to watchVerdict
Lower falls Flat, paved, short. Pushchair fine. Nothing to climb. Cliff edge. Some viewpoints have railings and some stretches of the park do not. Easier with toddlers
Upper falls Walking behind the water is the thing children remember. Steps, wet rock, spray, a confined cave. No pushchair route to the good part. Better from about school age
The cliff is the real one. At the lower falls the ground is easy and that is exactly what makes it easy to stop paying attention. Parts of the clifftop park are railed and parts are not, and the drop is straight into the sea.

What children actually like here

Walking behind a waterfall. That is the answer, and it is only available at the upper falls. The path runs along the back of the fall through a cave and you come out the other side, which is a better story than looking at water from a railing.

It is also the part that needs a hand held. The rock is wet the whole way, the spray is constant, and the space is tight enough that a child running ahead is a problem rather than a nuisance.

What to bring

How long to allow

The lower falls are twenty minutes if you walk to the viewpoint and back, an hour if you use the park. The upper falls are an hour or so including the cave. They are 12 km apart and are not one afternoon; if you have children with you, pick one.

The accessibility page covers the same ground for wheelchairs and limited mobility, and the surfaces described there are the same ones a pushchair meets.

What we have not checked

Whether there are baby changing facilities at either site, and where. We did not verify it and we are not going to assume it. If that decides your day, ask your hotel to phone ahead.
