Why it collapses
Two reasons, and only one of them is the weather. Drought reduces what comes down the system, and agricultural irrigation takes water out upstream during exactly the months when there is least of it.
The site manager has said publicly that water is topped up to keep the falls looking right for the five to six thousand people arriving each day in summer. Knowing that in advance changes how you read the August photographs, including ours.
If you are here in July or August
You are not going to see the winter photograph. What you can do instead:
- Go to the lower falls. They drop into the sea and keep running year round. This is the single most useful piece of advice on this site.
- Take the boat rather than the clifftop. From the water the fall reads at full height regardless of volume.
- Go early. The park opens in the morning and both the light and the temperature are better before midday.
- Treat the upper falls as a park visit. The cave path is worth walking even when the curtain is thin.
